Upstairs Downstairs

Upstairs, Downstairs, and the loft too!

More discoveries at Cobdown House as we continue with the regeneration.

Tucked away in the loft, likely unused for 100 years, but still in good condition is the original bell system. Servant bells, also called house bells, are systems of wire and pulleys that run throughout a building and allow a resident to call for a servant from the far reaches of the building without leaving the room they are in, first mechanical, later electric.

We can still see the original pulley system for the dumbwaiter, the small lift to move food, dishes or laundry floors. Although this has long disappeared inside the house the pully system in the loft remains in good working condition.

The house, even after all the time working on the renovation still, it seems, has more to reveal.
